HPCM Management Ledger Part 5 – Modifying the Outline

In this series we have been creating and maintaining an HPCM application without the aid of EPMA, we have done a lot of work up to this point on the application, but now we need to make some changes to our outline.  Making outline changes to HPCM Management Ledger applications based on a master cube is actually very simple, so let’s walk through adding a new Location to our application.

The first thing you need to do is open up EAS and find your master cube, remember this is the Master cube, not the calculation cube created by HPCM. Once you have it opened, open up the outline in edit mode. From here, make your outline edits, just like you would any other Essbase cube.

It should be noted that you can edit the outline using any accepted Essbase outline method as long as you are editing your master cube; you do not have to do this manually as I am in this example.

Save your changes and let’s head into workspace and go to Navigate -> Administer -> Profitability Applications.  

Select your application and then select Actions -> Update Dimensions

Here you need to select your dimensions and decided if you are going to update or either do a Pre Update analysis.  The Pre Update analysis will give you an output that will show you any errors and impacts. Like this:

If you are ok with that analysis, you can go ahead and do the real update, you only need to push the dimensions where you have changes, but if you don’t know where the changes are, you can push all dimensions.

Once it is done, Job Library will show you that it was successful, or give you any relevant errors

Now that your master is updated, you just need to refresh your calculation cube, open up your application, and head over to Manage Database.

Select Update Database, and assuming you want to keep data, make sure that Preserve Data is checked, and then click on Deploy Now. When you do this a restructure will be performed, so depending on the size of your database, this could take some time.

Check in Job Library again, and you will see once it is completed

The last step you need to do is to close out your application and open it again, this will refresh the cache, if you don’t do this you will see this error when you try to use the application.

No worries though, just close the application and open it back up in workspace and you will be all set.
